Tom Bombadil
I have tried to research this a little myself but haven't found much information...
Does anyone know if PJ ever intended to cast someone to play Tom Bombadil? I know that he was written out of their adaptation and am aware that they have outlined their resons for this in the past, but am wondering if Bombadil was going to appear in the films...perhaps in the very embryonic stages of the Fellowship being made?
If not, then were there any discussions about at least referencing him in the films; even just a line or nod to his presence in Middle Earth? Or even better, does such a moment exist and I missed it in a deleted scene somewhere?

MEDIA NEWS:

From The Washington Post:
~J.R.R. Tolkien's war experiences inspire his grandson's novel, 'No Man’s Land'
The phrase "no man's land" conjures up the zone between opposing trenches on the Western Front of World War I. "No Man’s Land" is also the title of Simon Tolkien's barnburner of a novel, which, according to its dust jacket, was "inspired by the real-life experiences of his grandfather" in the same war. That would be J.R.R. Tolkien, future Oxford don and author of the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. [More]

Which villainous LOTR / Hobbit speech could real politicians quote?
I think we can play this game without making any actual political statements, and I encourage you to do so, or this thread will quickly be locked.
If you were a well-meaning writer crafting a speech for a politician whose policies you believed in, what evildoer's dialogue used in Tolkien's books or the movies adapted therefrom could you incorporate effectively into the speech? What would appeal to real listeners?
Again, please avoid comments, pro or con, about actual politicians.

Tolkien’s word ‘mathom’ is one many of us can relate to
The word ‘mathom,’ invented by J.R.R. Tolkien, was used by Hobbits to describe anything they ‘had no use for but were unwilling to throw away.’ If that sounds familiar as you look around at your collection of Tolkien books and other collectibles, it did to Andrew Whalen at iDigitalTimes too. Why Tolkien’s fantastic imaginary languages have had more impact than Esperanto
JRR Tolkien began writing The Fall of Gondolin while on medical leave from the first world war, 100 years ago this month. It is the first story in what would become his legendarium – the mythology that underpins The Lord of the Rings. But behind the fiction was his interest in another epic act of creation: the construction of imaginary languages. [Read more]

January 2017 Challenge: Taboo
All cultures have behaviors that are forbidden. And frankly, our beloved Silmarillion characters get up to quite a lot of them.

This month's theme is Taboo and features a bingo card for participants to self-select a prompt or prompts to inspire their fanworks. To participate as a creator, you need only to create a fanwork using one prompt; however, for the more adventurous among us, we encourage you to combine prompts, complete rows, or attempt one of the dozen variations of card patterns. You may use multiple prompts in a single fanwork or use prompts to inspire multiple fanworks.

The bridge movie
I wonder if this could still be made. The movie which was going to span the time between the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings. Though I am not entirely sure what would be in it, the Dunedain involved mostly I guess. Though if they did include Bree, they could have Hobbits. How far advanced did they ever get in this idea? Was a script ever written, models designed, potential actors discussed etc? Anyway, it could possibly still be done without conflicting Silmarillion rights.

From Middle-earth and J.R.R. Tolkien Blog:
Were the Corsairs of Umbar Numenoreans?
You have to define what you mean by Numenorean in order to answer a question such as “Were the Corsairs of Umbar Numenoreans?” You also have to establish the boundaries of your canon, for J.R.R. Tolkien devised much of the history of Umbar after he wrote the primary text of The Lord of the Rings. Writing for the Middle-earth Role-playing audience in 2003, Tolkien scholar Chris Seeman attempted to reset gamer expectations for how Umbar should be perceived and described. Chris’ essay looks at many points and is well worth reading regardless of whether you have an interest in gaming.
That said, we can probably arrive at a simple conclusion by setting some basic rules for consideration.
