September 2019 Challenge: In Rare FormGapfiller. Romance. Slash. Drama. Horror. Hurt/comfort. These genres have populated fanzines and archives with stories for decades and continue to be popular among fanfiction writers. This month also has a recommendation challenge. Find a fanwork or few for one of the rare formats or genres listed below and recommend your favorite(s). Please post your recommendations to our Dreamwidth, LiveJournal, or Tumblr (please tag @silmarillionwritersguild) to receive the stamp.

Do you wish he rewrote The Hobbit?
Apparently Tolkien became dissatisfied with the tone of The Hobbit in later life. He tried to rewrite it to be more in the tone of Lord of the Rings., but abandoned the project after three chapters possibly due to negative reception from a close friend, among other reasons of course.
Personally I would have liked to read the hobbit as an epic like Lord of the Rings, and while the hobbit is a great story for getting kids into reading and also of course into reading more Tolkien, I think it would have fit more snuggly into his legendarium.
This article might be wrong so please correct me if I’m wrong here. Also does anyone know where I might be able to read these three first chapters? Is it in a HOME volum?

Who Lived In Tharbad?
Tharbad comes up every now and then in online discussions. I’ve received a few questions about it across the years, too. It’s an intriguing town because readers of The Lord of the Rings only know one real detail about its history: when the town was abandoned (Third Age Year 2912). If you read Unfinished Tales of Numenor and Middle-earth you’ll learn a little bit more about Tharbad, but not much.
