How did the Ring become the thing around which the entirety of the Third Age revolved? How was it that the simple ring, freely offered by Gollum to Bilbo in 1937 (merely because he wanted to be rid of it!), came to dominate the counsels of the Wise and direct the course of history? To become, as it were, at least semi-sentient? [More]

JRR Tolkien's Oxford family home for sale at £4.5m
The house where author JRR Tolkien is believed to have written The Hobbit has gone on sale for more than £4m.

The six-bedroom home in Northmoor Road, Oxford, was home to the writer and his family from 1930 until 1947.

It was one of many built to house some of the county's leading academics in the 1920s, and has been described by an estate agent as "an important part of Oxford's history". [Read more]

October Challenge: Start to Finish
Spend even five minutes reading advice on how to write powerful fiction, and you will likely encounter the concept of the hook: a first line or lines crafted to snare your reader into reading your story. Whether you believe in this advice or not, there are definitely books with first lines that leave the reader intrigued, puzzled, or awestruck, fitting overtures to some of the most powerful, profound novels written in English.

For this month's challenge, choose one of the famous first lines from the list below and use it to start your story. If you are creating a fanwork other than writing, you may use one of the first lines to inspire your fanwork.

Challenge entries are due by November 10 in order to receive a stamp. As always, late entries are welcome but do not receive stamps.

Since you are using another author's first line, please credit the source in your story notes. Full challenge guidelines can be found on our website.

Best humorous passage in LotR, or Tolkien's works in general?
I will start. I have begun re-reading LotR and i giggled when Frodo called the group of 144 hobbits a Gross and they got weirded out by it. They thought he was insulting them while actually he just wanted to have a bit of a joke before leaving Bag End. It was also funny how he surprised them by disappearing when he put the Ring on his finger and made off (though i think this was more hilarious in the movies, in all honesty).

Plans to Preserve the SilmarillionWritersGuild Yahoo! Group
As many of you have heard, Yahoo! Groups will be deleting all web-based content as December 14. This includes the files and message archives of Groups and represents a potentially devastating loss of fandom history.

I have started a post to compile all information about how to personally preserve Groups, as well as projects that archive groups. I will update it as I learn more.

If you are a Yahoo! Group owner, please make plans for if/how you are going to download and preserve your group. See the link above for a form to fill out with this information. Please share this information with your Group so that your members know they do not need to step in to handle this. If you want someone to download/preserve your Group, let me know, and I will do it for you. PM me here or email me at DawnFelagund@gmail.com.

Group members, you can still download your Groups. You do not need to be an owner/mod. (However, as many projects will want owner permission to archive a Group, it is best to get that permission if you can, or for Group owners to share their plans with their Groups.)I have downloaded the SWG group. It will be available on the SWG website and Archive.org at a minimum. I will submit it to other projects if appropriate. Of course, feel free to make a personal copy of it if you want.

Did Elladan and Elrohir Ever Go to the Havens?
The short answer is that we don’t know what became of Elladan and Elrohir. They are last mentioned being in Arwen’s wedding party and presumably returned to Rivendell with their father.

Tolkien wrote in 1954, in Letter No. 153, that “The end of [Elrond’s] sons, Elladan and Elrohir, is not told: they delay their choice, and remain for a while.”

~Exploring the People of Middle-earth: Elrond Half-elven, Healer of Rivendell
Elrond is one of those characters who just seems to have a finger in every pie. He's the son of Eärendil, one of Middle-earth's icons, and is thus the descendant of a Maia (Melian) and a number of legendary figures, including Beren and Lúthien. He's ruled Imladris for many lifetimes of men; he married the daughter of Galadriel, the most powerful Eldar of the Third Age; he played foster-parent to the majority of the heirs of Elendil; his brother founded the Númenorean line; and his daughter marries the returning king of Gondor and Arnor. On the other hand, however, Elrond never lands the starring role. [More]

Elves and the Witch King
Just saw a meme about Eowyn stabbing the Witch King and it made me think about the prophecy.

Made by Glorfindel, it says "Far off yet is his doom, and not by the hand of men will he fall."

So why didn't the elves do something about him? And I don't mean immediately, the just drove him from Angmar and couldn't chase him right away that happened all the time after the big wars.

But why not later? What about when they first crossed the Anduin during Fellowship? Why didn't some elves go after him?

And again I get they were leaving middle Earth but there were elves there and they cared. Why didn't Elrond or Galadriel/Celeborn sally out after them? 2 elven rings should've been enough right? And they could've taken a squad with them too - elves aren't wanting for skilled warriors or loremasters.

And speaking of which, Gandalf (and the other istari but I get why all the others wouldn't do anything) isn't a man. We know Gandalf barely held the nine off from weather too, but he was alone. What if all 3 elven rings were there!

Seems like destroying/crippling/detaining the nine would have been a great way to skirmish Sauron before the war really started.

Why Did the Balrog Never Leave Moria?
A reader asked if I know why the Balrog of Moria (or “Fred” as we affectionately call him on SF-Fandom) never left the deep places of the world to which he fled after the defeat of Melkor.

Well, the short answer is that I do not know. But the question was submitted with the following comment:
In the Treason of Isengard there is a note from Tolkien, where he considered Gandalf saying the following to the Balrog: “It is forbidden for any Balrog to come beneath the sky since Fionwe son of Manwe overthrew Thangorodrim.” So perhaps that explains it.

Perhaps. Thing is, The Treason of Isengard documents earlier drafts of the story; hence, whatever you find there was most likely rejected by J.R.R. Tolkien. We should not treat the flotsam and jetsam of his thought as co-equals with what he decided should be published.

Over the years, and perhaps especially after the release of Peter Jackson's film adaptations of The Lord of the Rings, Denethor has become one of the most despised characters in Tolkien's Middle-earth. His blatant favoritism of Boromir over Faramir seems to be at least one root of this hatred. But where did the Steward's cruelty come from?
