    ~September 2020 Challenge: A Naturalist's Guide to Middle-earth
In spite of the focus of the narrative, Middle-earth isn't all warfare, secret realms, and ambitious craftsmanship. There are scholars and explorers too -- and a whole world to explore! This month's challenge invites you to sneak a peek into these explorers' notebooks for inspiration.

Prompts are images from historical naturalist publication -- waiting for you to imagine how they may fit into Middle-earth (or Valinor, or Númenor, or...). You don't have to write about naturalists, explorers or research expeditions unless you want to -- just go wherever the prompt takes you. ~A Series of Unfortunate Choices (Made By the Children of Húrin)
In Which the Son of Húrin... Well... It's Hard to... Oh, It's All Just the Worst. As Túrin confronts the dreaded father of all dragons on the doorstep of Nargothrond, it's time for us to confront the second half of the Tale of the Children of Húrin as summarized in Chapter 21 of The Silmarillion. Here the tale widens, as we are reminded through new tragedies that Túrin isn't the only doomed child of Húrin--nor the only one yoked by the curse of Morgoth. [More]

The Teleri decision
First a disclaimer. This is not a post to bash the Teleri or any of their nobles. Nor it is a post to praise our mighty lord Feanor the great, Feanor the wise, Feanor the... Sorry. This is written with the firm believe thar someone will help me understand some acttions that bother me a little bit only. Let's go!

We are at Aman. Melkor (aka Morgoth) kills Finwë, steals the Silmarils, kills the Trees and runs.

Everyone is sad, but when the news from Formentos get to Feanor he assembles his people swears the Oath and goes after Morgoth.

He reaches the Teleri, allied of his people and their king personal friend of his father. Here comes the part that I don't really understand.

Why does Olwe not help the Noldo?

Yeah; it was a rushed course of action, yeah; Feanor was not the most likeable person, yeah; they were concerned about the Noldo safety.

But what did they think would happen to their kin in Beleriand?

What would happen to the Noldo who would have to build ans sail ships across and ocean with zero sailing skills? Or if they choose to cross the Helcaraxe?

To me it seems contradictory.

As always thanks for reading!

EDIT: Please I am not trying to justify Feanor like people is starting to think. I firmly believe in the points I have made and want some further explanation. Thanks!

Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings film trilogy delves deep into the mythos of Middle-earth, providing the most fully realized film adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved books to date. Many of the films' characters remained remarkably unchanged in the transition from the page to the screen. Actor Andy Serkis, for instance, received praise from fans and critics alike for faithfully portraying Sméagol/Gollum in all his greedy despair. The late Ian Holm is also remembered for his spot-on rendition of the beloved Bilbo Baggins. [More]

Why Hugo Weaving Doesn’t Want to Return to ‘Lord of the Rings’
Hugo Weaving isn’t returning to Middle-earth any time soon — or probably ever.
“No way. Absolutely no,” Weaving tells Variety in a recent phone interview about whether or not he would don the elf ears as Elrond again, considering the upcoming “Lord of the Rings” Amazon series. Weaving starred as the half-elven leader in both the “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” trilogies, which collectively grossed almost $6 billion worldwide and is currently being adapted into a show for the streaming platform (it’s set before “The Fellowship of the Ring,” so perhaps a younger version of Elrond could appear). Lots of talk around here concerning Sauron and his dominion over his pet Nazgûl - and this got me wondering how he physically maintained his possession over the nine rings.

Why wouldn’t the Lord of the Rings wear all of them at once?

Why Did Frodo Wait 17 Years to Leave the Shire?
This is one of those questions that arises from the conflict between the Peter Jackson movies and J.R.R. Tolkien’s book. It has been asked both ways: “What happened to the seventeen year gap between the Farewell Party and Frodo’s departure from the Shire (in the movie)?”

How did we lose seventeen years? In other words, why did Peter Jackson not tell the same story as J.R.R. Tolkien? I don’t know. We might as well ask why Rhett and Scarlett only had one child in the film version of “Gone with the Wind”. But we should try to clear up a misperception as best we can.

Why do people skip the songs?
I've noticed a lot of people mention that they dislike the songs and poems included in LotR. I can sort of understand the dislike of them, they're a very unique device and I can see why they wouldn't be to everyone's taste, even though I love them. But why do people skip them? They aren't more difficult to read than the rest of the text. They're always relevant to what's happening in the story at the time, unlike some other fantasy books. They also generally provide interesting/useful information (except for Tom Bombadil I guess). Why don't people just read through them even if they don't like them?

Sauron means "the Abhorred" in Quenya, and he's earned the name plenty already. As the master of Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the Isle of Werewolves, he's captured many Elves already; a bunch of thralls languish in his pits even now. But only one from his most recent batch of prisoners is left: Beren son of Barahir, whose quest for a Silmaril seems to have stopped short. [More]

What CAN pierce mithril?
Could Elven blades pierce it?

What about Shelob's stinger? (forgot the movies)

And what about a Morgul-blade/Barrow-blade or Huan's teeth or anything else I'm forgetting?

And the thing I'm curious most about is whether a mithril blade could pierce a mithril armor.

Edit: I realize we have no mention of mithril ever being pierced, but I'd like to know what
you think could do it. Personally I think a sword in the caliber of Narsil or even Glamdring/Orcist could do it. I also think Huan is up for the task. (I obviously base this on absolutely nothing.)

A Few Ways to Get Involved in the Site Rebuild ...
I am continuing to make good progress on the site rebuild. Because our new software will be much more flexible than our old software, I can build several "wishlist" items that people have asked for. As I work on this, there are a few tasks with which others can be of assistance:
  • We will be adding two Relationships fields: Major Relationships and Minor Relationships. These will include both romantic/sexual pairings and platonic relationships. Authors will be able to tag their fanworks with the relationships that feature and occur in the background, and readers will be able to find fanworks with those relationships. I have started a list of relationships to add to the initial list on the site. (You will be able to request a relationship that is not on the list--and through a much easier process than our current process to have new characters added!) If you'd like access to add to this list, please comment here or email us at moderator@silmarillionwritersguild.org.
  • Likewise, we currently have some character groups on our Character list, e.g., the Valar or the Noldor. However, this list is far from complete. If you'd like access to this list as we continue to build it--same instructions as above.
  • We have always accepted fanworks in languages other than English. However, this is not prominently expressed on our current site, and we'd like to change that. On the new site, you will be able to choose the language your fanwork is written in. If you want to post in a language not on the list, you will be able to add it. However, I'd like to start with a pre-populated list. I currently have received requests for Polish, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Russian, Japanese, and Mandarin Chinese. If there is a language you'd like to see that is not on the list, let me know by commenting here or emailing. Please note that we are looking for real-world languages, not Tolkien's languages. (There will be a separate way to identify fanworks that work with Tolkien's languages.)
  • As before, we will have our Site Etiquette and Terms of Service translated into as many languages as we can. Since we just rewrote it, unfortunately, our existing translations are no more good, so we have to start from scratch. If you're interested in translating, again, comment here or email. We already have translations in the works for French, Spanish, and Portuguese but all other languages are still available.
  • Finally, our inclusivity focus group is always open for new members from marginalized groups who would like to contribute to making the SWG as inclusive a place as possible. We're about to start working through our FAQs and other supporting documents on the site. Let me know if you'd like to join this work and other inclusivity discussions moving forward.

Are the Nazgûl Really Afraid of Water?
In an early draft for The Lord of the Rings J.R.R. Tolkien experimented with the idea that the Nazgûl were afraid to enter the waters of the Bruinen, the river bordering Rivendell, because they might be barred from crossing running water. This idea was borrowed from traditional folklore which holds that certain evil creatures cannot cross running water.

However, J.R.R. Tolkien ultimately abandoned the idea because he would otherwise not be able to explain how the Nazgûl reached the Shire from Mordor. They had to cross the Anduin river, the Gwathlo river, and the Brandywine river in order to reach the Shire.

Nonetheless when the Nazgûl attempt to seize Frodo at the Ford of Bruinen, they appear to be reluctant to enter the water.

    ~Melkor vs. Morgoth
In the beginning, Morgoth went by the name Melkor, which meant "He Who Rises in Might." As the strongest of the Ainur, it was a fitting name. But after he killed the Two Trees, murdered Finwe, and stole the silmarils, he was given a new name. Feanor (who, being personally affected by most of these acts, felt a special enmity towards Morgoth), called him Morgoth, which meant "Black Foe of the World."

Most of Tolkien's characters have at least two names, if not more, so the Melkor/Morgoth thing wouldn't stand out at all, if not for the interesting fact that, among the elves, the name "Morgoth" completely replaced "Melkor." [More]

From silwritersguild: August 2020 Challenge: Utopia/Dystopia
For more than a decade, the SWG has encouraged its members to focus on the sometimes overlooked Second Age of Middle-earth for “Akallabêth in August”.

The Second Age sees the creation of new realms—such as Eregion or Númenor—founded in hope and idealism after the War of Wrath. But in Arda Marred, good things never last. Eregion is overrun by Sauron, and Númenor descends into aggression and tyranny. In an earlier age, the seemingly perfect environment of Valinor becomes a prison to some of its inhabitants, while later even the idyllic Shire turns foul under Saruman’s influence. Whether the seeds of destruction are brought in from outside or whether they were there from the start, the fragility of bliss, the Fall from Grace and the slippery slope from good intentions to evil deeds are a frequent theme in Tolkien’s works.

To reflect both the idealistic beginnings and the dark endings that are so frequent in the Legendarium, we invite you to create a fanwork inspired by utopian or dystopian prompts from novels, songs, artworks, or films. Your fanwork doesn’t have to be utopian or dystopian in itself, nor does it have to be about the Second Age (though of course there will be special stamps if it is); it simply has to respond to your prompt—wherever that prompt takes you.

This month, you will select your own prompt from the list below. In order to receive a stamp for your fanwork, your response must be posted to the archive on or before 10 September 2020. For complete challenge guidelines, see the Challenges page on our website.

Saruman leaves Gandalf armed?
Question about the nature of Gandalfs abduction at Orthanc. How did Saruman do it, and do it seemingly without a struggle? We have to assume , in those dangerous times, that Gandalf journeyed to Orthanc still armed with his staff and his sword, Glamdring. I assume he never took off his ring Narya either.

WHY did Saruman leave Gandalf armed, especially with his sword? If Saruman feared to escalate things further than they already were then why did Gandalf himself not escalate them and attempt to fight his way out? Gandalf knew the 9 black riders were on the hunt, he knew how very fatal him being delayed at Orthanc was. He risked his life fighting the Balrog, why did he not even try to fight Saruman and his guards?

And if we assume he DID try to fight Saruman and his guards, he lost (since he was then imprisoned) and almost certainly would of been disarmed then.

Gandalf escaping with Narya is plausible since it can be hidden (Galadriel tells us this, though if ANYONE had a chance to see it, it would of been Saruman who possessed his own self made ring of power, but regardless..),

Gandalf escaping with his staff is a stretch. But escaping with his sword on him just makes no sense.
